The Future of Viable and Sustainable Learning in Design-education

A decade of and a program, including world-wide initiatives for developing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has been formed by UN and UNESCO (2004). From 2004 - 2014 the acquisition of “Sustainable life skills” has been particularly emphasised – and national strategies and more than 150 (National) Regional Centers of ESD’s have been established. Lately, the report: Education for Sustainable Development Goals (2017) stresses developing an emancipatory frame for developing ESD’s with a definition of the development of eight competencies. (6) UNESCO, 2017, p 10-55 (8) Rieckmann 2018. By having a focus on the emancipatory approach of developing “cross-cutting” competencies its aim is to provide not only
“the knowledge to understand what the SDGs are all about, but also the competencies to make a difference towards a more sustainable society”. (6) UNESCO, 2017
